Therapy for Children in Flint, MI
The Traini Counseling Group
Children's Counseling for Residents of Michigan
Our prescribers work with children age 8 and older for psychiatric evaluation and medication management. When appropriate, we are happy to coordinate care with your child's therapist, counselor, pediatrician, or school to help create a consistent approach to treatment.
While, our counselors are currently not taking children under 13 due to high demand, our psychiatric providers provide individualized mental health care for children and adolescents as young as 8. We take the time to understand your child's symptoms, history, school functioning, behavior, and overall mental health before developing a treatment plan.
Medication management may be appropriate for children experiencing conditions such as:
- ADHD
- Anxiety
- Depression
- Mood disorders
- Behavioral and emotional concerns
- Attention and concentration difficulties
- Other mental health concerns
We provide ADHD evaluations and treatment for children and adolescents.
Our team considers your child's symptoms, developmental history, behavior, school performance, and other factors when evaluating concerns related to attention, impulsivity, hyperactivity, and emotional regulation.
If ADHD is identified, our providers can discuss appropriate treatment options and provide ongoing follow-up and medication management when clinically appropriate.
Why Should My Child Go to Therapy?
When your child is suffering from psychological distress, you may feel at a loss as to how to help. You might have tried many things yourself and felt like nothing has worked. This is where a child counselor and therapy can help.
Our team at The Traini Counseling Group are here to see your child succeed. It’s our priority to identify underlying issues that are affecting your child’s overall health and see what treatment he or she can receive to help them to feel better as soon as possible. Many psychological issues are complex and take time to heal emotionally and mentally.
Therapy and counseling offers your child an opportunity to learn valuable tools to help them function in today’s world. Strategies learned in therapy will help them deal with issues in a healthy and productive way. Our job as child therapists is to also help you as a parent navigate sometimes uncomfortable, stressful and scary times when it comes to keeping your child safe and healthy.
The Traini Counseling Group
The Traini Counseling Group’s Approach to Child Therapy
As mentioned before, The Traini Counseling Group focuses on play therapy, art therapy and talk-therapy.
Play therapy involves the use of play to communicate with children and to help children learn to solve problems and change negative behaviors. Children naturally engage in play to create meaning and organize experiences. This allows children to distance themselves from difficult feelings and memories through symbolic expression, using the toys as the medium to disclose these feelings.
Art therapy is very similar to play therapy; art therapy focuses more on a child creating with different mediums. Through crafting, coloring and creating, children can engage in self-exploration and create meaning out of their past experiences and emotions.
Talk therapy is just that–dedicated communication between your child and a therapist! Children and adolescents have the opportunity to speak with therapists about their experiences and share their emotions. Children are encouraged to talk “through” difficult issues. Talk therapy is generally used more with older children.
What Are Some Common Issues?
We conquer almost any and every behavioral or emotional concern. Common concerns include:
- Anxiety and Panic
- Attachment and adoption (domestic & international)
- Attention Deficit Hyperactivity (ADHD)
- Childhood Depression Disorder
- Death, Grief and Loss
- Divorce and Transition Issues
- Selective Mutism
- Trauma and post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
How Do I Start Therapy for My Child?
Therapy starts after a parent session where all history, concerns and background of the child are shared between the parent and the therapist. After that, a plan is formed and therapy begins with each child.
It is likely that many sessions will involve play therapy to some extent, if not all. Determinations for what best fits each individual child can only be made as we get to know one another.
