The truth is, relationships are hard. It’s important to know that every relationship, yes, even marriages, have their ups and downs, their highs and lows. Learning ways to improve communication between you and your partner and gaining conflict-resolution skills are the core focuses behind couples therapy here at The Traini Counseling Group. We see many couples who turn their relationship around and start to thrive. Together, we will help you explore and understand some of the reasons why things might not be working today, but can be improved on for the future.
Why Should We Go to Couples Counseling?
Personal relationships can be both fulfilling and frustrating. While conflict in relationships is not uncommon, issues that drive a wedge between you and your partner or problems that make you feel “stuck” may need outside help.
Before seeking counseling or therapy, it is important to note that you must acknowledge that your relationship needs help and that together you want to heal your relationship. When couples decide to pursue relationship therapy together, they make the first step towards “saving” their relationship.
How The Traini Counseling Group Approaches Couples Therapy

At The Traini Counseling Group, our goal is to help you and your partner explore feelings in a safe environment, discover new insights and positively contribute to rebuilding your relationship. Our talented group of counselors and therapists will work with you to establish which therapies work best for you and your partner. The most common therapies we use in marriage and relationship therapy is the Gottman Method and Emotionally Focused Therapy (or EFT.)
The Gottman Method aims to help couples communicate better, without conflict, increase intimacy, affection, and respect and give couples the right tools to fight feelings of “stagnancy.” Through this method, couples can also learn to have a great sense of empathy and understanding of their partner and their relationship.
Emotionally Focused Therapy, also known as EFT, is centered on helping couples become closer and feel emotionally safe with one another. With EFT, we will explore each person’s individual emotional needs and how the other partner can best meet those needs.
Please note that while these are the more common therapies used during couples counseling, there are many, many options that are available and may be better suited for you and your partner.
What Are Some Common Issues?
We can help you work through nearly any relationship issue you may face. Issues we see most often include:
- Poor Communication
- Financial Problems
- Sexual Differences and/or Dysfunctions
- Parenting Challenges
- Substance Abuse/Addiction
- Anger/Abuse
- Infidelity
- Divorce
How Does Couples Therapy Work?
The initial session will consist of your therapist getting to know you and your partner. During subsequent sessions, you will establish past and current issues and goals you want to accomplish. Depending on your individual and relationship needs, your therapy may last a couple sessions or a couple months.
Typically you will attend therapy as a couple, but there may be instances where your therapist will ask you to attend a session one-on-one. You will learn new skills and be expected to practice these skills outside of therapy (yes, homework!) Ultimately, our goal is to help you learn what a healthy relationship is and how to thrive in yours again.
